How Far in Advance Should I Book My Uganda Gorilla Safari?

Gorilla trekking is not like booking a hotel room or a flight. The permits are strictly limited, tied to a specific date and a specific gorilla family, and there is no waitlist once a date sells out. If you are planning a Uganda gorilla safari, understanding the booking timeline is not just helpful advice it is the foundation of your entire trip.

The short answer is this: book your gorilla permit as early as possible, ideally 6 to 12 months in advance for peak season travel, and no less than 3 to 6 months ahead for the low season. For peak season, We recommend booking as far as 6 to 10 months ahead for the most popular sectors. Permits often sell out long before accommodation does, and booking early is everything.

Here is the full picture, so you can plan with confidence.

Why Gorilla permits are so time-sensitive?

Every gorilla trekking permit in Uganda is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), and nobody else. Each permit is tied to a specific date and a specific habituated gorilla family in one of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park’s four trekking sectors Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo or in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

The critical constraint is this: each gorilla family can host only eight visitors per day. With approximately 20 habituated families across Bwindi and Mgahinga, that means roughly 160 permits are available daily across the entire country. That is it. No extensions, no flexibility, no waitlist.

Permits are sold first-come, first-served. Once a date sells out, the only way a slot reopens is through a cancellation. And cancellation slots are rare, unpredictable, and often snapped up within hours.

Book 6 to 12 Months ahead for peak season

If you are travelling during the peak dry seasons June to September and December to February this is when permits are in highest demand and sell out fastest.

The overwhelming consensus from safari operators and travel planners is clear: book 6 to 12 months in advance for peak-season gorilla trekking. At Exclusive Gorilla Vacations recommend 6 to 10 months ahead for the most popular sectors like Buhoma and Rushaga.

Why so far ahead? Because the best lodges near the trailheads sell out at the same pace as the permits. If you wait, you may secure a permit but find yourself staying an hour’s drive away from your trekking departure point.

For a July or August trip the busiest months of the year the smartest travellers start planning in the previous autumn or winter. By the time spring arrives, the best dates and the best lodges are often already gone.

3 to 6 Months is usually enough for shoulder season

The shoulder seasons March, early June, and November offer a sweet spot. Weather conditions are still reasonable for trekking, but demand drops significantly. For these months, booking 3 to 6 months in advance is typically sufficient to secure both permits and good accommodation. That said, earlier is always safer. The best boutique lodges with fewer than ten rooms can still sell out well before the permits do.

November is particularly interesting because it sits in the low season for permit pricing but offers shoulder-season conditions. The forest is green, the crowds are thin, and the trails are manageable. If you can be flexible with your dates, November can deliver excellent value.

Sometimes you can book Just 1 to 3 months out during the Low Season

The wettest months April, May, and October see the lowest demand. Trails are muddier, treks are more physically demanding, but the forest is spectacularly lush, crowds are thin, and lodge rates drop.

During these months, it is sometimes possible to secure permits just 1 to 3 months out, or even at the last minute. There is even a financial incentive: UWA offers discounted permits for April, May, and November at $600 for foreign non-residents, down from the standard $800.

The trade-off is that these discounted permits cannot be rescheduled. If your dates shift, standard cancellation rules apply with no date-change option.

What Changed in 2026: Full payment required at Booking

One important change for 2026 travellers: UWA has eliminated the previous 7-day reservation hold. Full payment is now required at the time of booking to secure a permit.

This means there is no “maybe” option anymore. You either pay in full and lock in your date, or you risk losing it to someone else. The days of holding a permit while you finalise flights are over.

Permits First, Everything else second

The most common planning mistake is booking flights first and then trying to find permits for the dates you chose. This is backwards.

The correct approach is this: fix your travel dates, secure your gorilla permits immediately, then build the rest of your itinerary around those confirmed dates.

Your permit date is fixed. The lodges, the game drives, the driving distances between parks all of it is built around the permit. If you book flights first and permits are unavailable, you will be rearranging your entire trip at the last minute.

Book accommodation at the same time as your permit

The lodges closest to the gorilla trekking trailheads particularly in Buhoma and Rushaga sell out as quickly as the permits themselves. Some of the best boutique properties with fewer than ten rooms can be fully booked before the permits are even gone.

If you are travelling during peak season, book your accommodation at the same time as your permit. Do not assume you can find a room later. The lodges closest to the park gates are the first to fill, and they are the ones that save you an hour of driving on trekking morning.

How to book your Gorilla Permit?

Foreign non-residents must now book gorilla permits through a licensed Ugandan tour operator. Direct booking through UWA’s website is no longer available for this category of visitor.

Exclusive Gorilla Vacations can check real-time availability across sectors, handle the payment to UWA on your behalf, and secure your permit the moment your dates are confirmed. You will need to provide a scanned passport at the time of booking, as permits are tied to specific passport details and are non-transferable.

If your Uganda safari includes gorilla trekking, the permit is the anchor of your entire trip. Book it as early as possible. And remember permits first, flights second. Everything else falls into place once your permit is secured.

At Exclusive Gorilla Vacations, we handle the entire permit process for our clients securing availability, processing payment, and aligning your gorilla permit with a seamless itinerary. We know which sectors sell out first, which lodges to book, and how to build a trip around your confirmed dates.
