Tarangire National Park has fewer formal gates than many visitors expect for a park of its size. Understanding where they are, which one suits your itinerary, and what happens when you arrive can save time and frustration on your safari day.
The park sits in Tanzania’s Manyara Region, roughly two to two and a half hours from Arusha . Its gates operate on a strict 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM schedule, and all game driving must happen within that window . Fees are paid by card or mobile money cash is not accepted at the Tarangire National Park Entrance Gates .
The Boundary Hill Gate is the primary entrance to Tarangire and the one almost every visitor uses. It sits on the western side of the park, reached by a short spur off the tarmac Arusha to Dodoma road. Coming from Arusha, you turn at the small town of Kwa Kuchinja and follow the access road the last stretch to the gate .
This is where your safari paperwork gets sorted. Your guide handles entry formalities, the vehicle is registered, and you pass into the northern part of the park close to the Tarangire River. That location is a large part of why the main gate dominates it drops you straight into the busiest and most productive area, where elephant herds and baobab trees concentrate, especially in the dry months .

The Sangaiwe Gate sits on the western border of the park, north of the Sangaiwe area and one of Tarangire National Park Entrance Gates . It is roughly 40 minutes from the Babati-Makuyuni route and is mostly used by visitors coming from the southern part of the park .
This gate offers an alternative entry point from the west, often used by travellers arriving from the Lake Manyara or Ngorongoro direction. It provides access to accommodation both within and outside the park .
Some sources refer to this corridor as the Sangaiwe/Kwasuyo corridor, reflecting the broader access route .
Tarangire has a few other gates that serve more specific needs or regions.
Kwa Ndege Gate is situated on the park’s southern border, making it a perfect entry point for those travelling from Lake Manyara National Park or the southern safari circuit .
Matete Gate is located on the eastern side of Tarangire National Park. It provides access to more remote areas of the park, including some of the southern reaches .
Minjingu Gate is located near the town of Minjingu, south of Lake Manyara. This entry point offers easy access for travellers coming from the Manyara and Karatu regions .
It is worth noting that some sources list slightly different gate names and configurations, so confirming with your tour operator or checking the Tanzania National Parks website before you travel is always wise.
Boundary Hill lends its name to the main gate, but the area itself sits toward the north east of the park and marks a different kind of access. This side of Tarangire borders the Randilen Wildlife Management Area, a community-run conservation area that shares an unfenced boundary with the park .
Several camps operate on the Randilen side, and their guests can enter the park from the north east rather than driving round to the main western gate. This route is not a public through-road. It works for travellers already staying in that area, who reach the park via community land and enter through the eastern boundary .
The appeal is quiet. This part of the park sees far fewer vehicles than the river circuit near the main gate, and the drive in crosses open country that holds wildlife in its own right, since Randilen is contiguous with Tarangire and animals move freely between them .
Tarangire follows the standard Tanzania national park hours. The gates and the park are open daily from 6:00 AM until 6:00 PM . All game driving happens inside that window, and visitors are expected to be out of the park, or checked into their accommodation inside it, by the 6:00 PM close .
These hours matter most for day trippers. If you are visiting from Arusha and returning the same day, the two-hour drive at each end eats into the open window, so an early departure from town makes a real difference to how long you actually spend on a game drive . Guests staying at camps inside the park have more freedom, since being resident means the closing time is less of a constraint.
Payment is cashless. Park fees are paid by card or mobile money at the gate cash is not accepted . Bring a Visa or Mastercard enabled for international transactions, and let your bank know you are travelling so the payment does not get flagged and blocked. Card terminals at remote gates depend on network signal that can drop, so having a second card as backup is sensible .

If you are arriving from the Manyara or Karatu regions, the Minjingu Gate offers convenient access .
