Exclusive Gorilla Vacations

Any time of year is suitable for gorilla habituation, a unique activity available only at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Since Bwindi Gorilla Park is open all year round, there is no one ideal time for mountain gorilla habituation.

What is the best time for gorilla habituation

To enjoy your once-in-a-lifetime activity, it is better to be aware of the ideal time to visit the national park for habituation. In Uganda, only the Bikingi and Bushaho gorilla families, who all live in the park’s southern region, are available for gorilla habituation.

There are two dry seasons and two wet seasons in the Ugandan mountain gorilla park of Bwindi. Depending on the traveler’s budget, all of these seasons are suitable for trekking, but some are superior to others. The best times for giant apes trekking are during the two dry seasons. The long dry season lasts from June to September, while the short dry season lasts from December to February.

The months in the dry season are characterized by little to no rainfall, making them ideal for acclimating mountain gorillas in Bwindi. The dry season draws the most tourists, and because habituation permits are few and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, they are always hard to come by and sell out quickly.

Travelers should prepare for little to no rain during the dry season, but they should still carry a rain jacket and waterproof hiking boots. The roads leading to the different sectors of the park are well maintained; the trekking trails are less muddy and occasionally dry, which has no impact on hikers’ speed; the vegetation is short, providing the best views of the gorillas; and photography is excellent.

Since the park is open all year-round, gorilla habituation can still be done during the rainy season. This time, the lodges are extremely affordable, which benefits those on a tight budget because the owners have lowered the prices to draw in the few patrons who frequent the park. March, April, May, October, and November are the dry months.

They are distinguished by excessive rainfall that turns the hiking trails muddy and treacherous, by tall, dense vegetation, and by hazy views of the park animals.

Bwindi’s gorilla habituation experience

A maximum of 4 people can participate in the Bwindi gorilla habituation experience, and all participants must have valid gorilla trekking permits. The activity is carried out in the Nkuringo and Rushaga regions, and it begins with an early-morning briefing at the park offices.

Two-armed ranger guides lead the trekkers through the jungle after the park wardens instruct them on the guidelines for the gorilla habituation activity. Researchers and conservationists who teach the armed ranger guides how to get mountain gorillas used to humans’ presence travel with them.

The semi-habituated mountain gorilla family is sought after by trekkers participating in the gorilla habituation activity. The activity lasts between two and seven hours, and the amount of time it takes to find the gorilla family depends on both their location and the speed of the trekkers.

There are opportunities to encounter various park animals while looking for the mountain gorilla family, including buffaloes, leopards, duikers, bush pigs, giant forest hogs, different species of birds, and more. The trekkers are given an hour to spend with the semi-habituated mountain gorilla family, observe them going about their daily lives, take pictures, and make videos.

Along with researchers and conservationists, you will take part in activities that help mountain gorillas get used to people. If you’re really lucky, you might get to participate in the gorilla naming ceremony before making the trek out of the jungle to claim your certificates for going in search of gorillas.

A gorilla habituation permit costs how much?

Any traveler who wishes to see semi-habituated mountain gorillas in their natural habitats must have a gorilla habituation permit. The Uganda Wildlife Authority only sells gorilla habituation permits to individuals who are 15 years of age or older. Foreign non-residents must pay $1500 for a single gorilla habituation permit, while foreign residents must pay $1,000 and East African nationals must pay UGX250,000.

How many permits exist in Uganda for gorilla habituation?

In Uganda, there are only 8 permits available for habituated gorillas, and they are all for Bwindi Gorilla Park, where habituated mountain gorillas are actually kept. Because there are only two habituated gorilla groups in the country (Bushaho and Bikingi), and each of these is trekked by 4 people, there are only eight gorilla habituation permits available.
