This 3-day gorilla trekking safari starts from Kigali and takes you across the Katuna border into Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for a once-in-a-lifetime mountain gorilla experience.  Then relax from Lake Bunyonyi on a boat ride.

Detailed itinerary

After an early breakfast at your hotel in Kigali (around 6:00 AM), your safari guide will meet you and drive you to the Katuna border, approximately 2.5 hours from Kigali. You will complete exit formalities from Rwanda and entry into Uganda using your East Africa Tourist Visa. From the border, continue driving for about 2 hours through winding hills and tea plantations to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

You will arrive at your lodge in the early afternoon, check in, and enjoy lunch. In the late afternoon, attend a mandatory pre-gorilla trekking briefing at the lodge or park headquarters, where you will be assigned a gorilla family and given important safety rules. Dinner and overnight at your lodge in Bwindi.

Hotel: Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge

Meal Plan: Half Board

Wake up very early at 5:30 AM for a light breakfast, then report to Bwindi park headquarters by 7:00 AM with your gorilla permit, sturdy boots, rain jacket, and packed snacks. After a brief orientation from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, you will begin gorilla tracking at 8:00 AM. The trek can take 2 to 6 hours (or longer) through steep, thick, and muddy forest.

Once you locate a habituated mountain gorilla family, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing the silverback, mothers, babies, and juveniles as they eat, play, and rest. After the trek, transfer 1.5 to 2 hours to Lake Bunyonyi, a stunning crater lake with terraced hills and 29 islands. Check into your lakeside lodge, enjoy dinner, and overnight at Lake Bunyonyi.

After breakfast at your lodge (around 7:30 AM), you have free time to enjoy the beauty of Lake Bunyonyi. By 10:00 AM, check out of your lodge and begin your drive back to Kigali via the Katuna border.

The drive takes approximately 4 to 5 hours, including border formalities (exit Uganda, re-enter Rwanda). You will stop for lunch along the way. Arrive at Kigali International Airport by 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM, in time for your departure flight. End of safari.
