8-Day Tsavo & Amboseli Wildlife Safari

Safari overview

This itinerary bypasses the standard northern tracks to explore Kenya’s legendary southern wilderness: Tsavo West, Tsavo East, and Amboseli. Tsavo is famous for its wild lava flows, underwater hippo viewings, red-dusted elephants, and open terrain where you rarely see other safari vehicles. It offers a rugged, authentic sense of adventure.

Detailed itinerary

Morning:Depart Nairobi at 07:00 AM, driving south down the Mombasa highway before entering the gates of Tsavo West National Park.

Afternoon:Arrive at your lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, visit Mzima Springs, a remarkable natural oasis where millions of gallons of crystal-clear water bubble out from volcanic rocks. Walk with an armed ranger to an underwater glass viewing chamber to observe hippos and crocodiles swimming.

Night:Dinner and overnight at Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge (or similar).

Morning:Take a morning drive across the spectacular Shetani Lava Flows, a massive field of black volcanic rock. Return for breakfast, check out, and drive across the highway into Tsavo East National Park.

Afternoon:Arrive for lunch at your new lodge. Tsavo East is flat and expansive, famous for its red-dust elephants and large prides of lions. Set out on an afternoon game drive along the Galana River tracks.

Night:Dinner and overnight at Ashnil Aruba Lodge (or similar).

Morning/Afternoon:Spend a full day exploring Tsavo East. Visit Lugard Falls, where the Galana River carves through rock formations, creating rapids filled with large crocodiles. Drive along the Yatta Plateau, the world’s longest fossilized lava flow. Track Tsavo’s unique maneless male lions and large herds of Cape buffalo.

Night:Dinner and overnight at Ashnil Aruba Lodge (or similar).

Morning:After breakfast, check out and drive west toward Mount Kilimanjaro, entering Amboseli National Park by midday.

Afternoon:Check into your lodge for lunch. At 04:00 PM, set out on a game drive across Amboseli’s swamps to observe large elephant families feeding in the marshlands.

Night:Dinner and overnight at Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge (or similar).

Morning/Afternoon:Spend two complete days exploring Amboseli. Take pre-dawn drives for clear views of Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped peak, climb Observation Hill for panoramic views, and follow cheetahs and hyenas patrolling the dry lake beds.

Night:Dinner and overnight at Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge (or similar).

Morning/Afternoon:Spend a relaxed day exploring the park’s lesser-visited natural springs. These areas are a magnet for hundreds of bird species, including pelicans and kingfishers, as well as hippos resting in the deeper pools.

Night:Dinner and overnight at Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge (or similar).

Morning:Enjoy your final breakfast with views of the mountain. Take a short morning game drive as you exit the park gates.

Afternoon:Drive back north to Nairobi, arriving by mid-afternoon for your transfer to the international airport.
