Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date from Uganda. Ensure you have at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. Failure to meet these requirements may result in denied boarding or entry.
Most nationalities require a visa to enter Uganda. It is your responsibility to verify visa requirements based on your nationality. We strongly recommend applying for the Uganda eVisa online before travel. Processing typically takes 5–10 business days. A visa on arrival is available for some nationalities, but pre-arranged visas are safer and faster. If you are also visiting Kenya and Rwanda, consider the East African Tourist Visa for multiple entries across all three countries.
Visas/Entry Requirements apply for Uganda.
All travelers entering Uganda must present a valid International Certificate of Vaccination for yellow fever. The vaccine must be administered at least 10 days before arrival. This certificate is strictly enforced at immigration. Without it, you may be denied entry.
Consult your healthcare provider or travel medicine clinic at least 4–6 weeks before departure. Recommended immunizations include Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis (booster every 10 years), Polio, Rabies (for long-term travelers or those at risk of animal bites), and Meningitis (especially during dry season).
Malaria is present year-round in Uganda, including urban areas. You are strongly advised to take prescription antimalarial medication such as Malarone, Doxycycline, or Lariam. Use DEET-based insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants at dusk and dawn, and sleep under mosquito nets provided at lodges.
Check current entry requirements regarding COVID-19 testing or vaccination certificates, as these may change with little notice.
Health Entry Requirements apply for Uganda.
This 21-day Uganda safari is an active adventure through remote and wild destinations. Please review the following carefully to ensure this experience matches your expectations and physical capabilities.
Many lodges are built in traditional local style using natural materials. They offer an authentic, immersive experience but may lack standard Western amenities. Air-conditioning is not available at most properties. Some lodges require walking up many steps or steep slopes to reach your room.
Electricity is often provided by generators or solar systems. Power may not be available 24 hours a day. Charging time is usually limited to evening hours. If you use a CPAP machine, you must notify us in advance so we can arrange battery or generator support. However, power outages and generator failures can occur.
This itinerary includes several days with very early wake-up calls (5:00–6:00 AM) to maximize wildlife viewing opportunities. This is essential for spotting predators and avoiding the midday heat.
Gorilla tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park may take up to 7 hours, depending on the movement and location of the gorillas. This requires a high level of physical fitness. You must be able to hike unassisted at a steady pace through dense, often slippery, uneven terrain at altitudes of up to 8,553 feet (2,607 meters) . While this is not high enough for altitude sickness, you may experience heavy breathing and need frequent rest breaks.
Any visitor showing signs of illness (cough, fever, flu, or any respiratory symptoms) will not be permitted to enter Kibale Forest National Park or Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This is to protect endangered primates from human-transmitted diseases. No refunds will be given for denied entry due to illness.
During game drives, only “nature toilets” (bush toilets) are available. There are no restroom facilities inside the national parks. Your guide will identify safe and appropriate spots.
Wildlife is unpredictable. Participation in animal-related activities (gorilla tracking, chimpanzee tracking, rhino walking, game drives) carries inherent risks. You must follow all instructions given by guides and rangers at all times. Your safety and the welfare of the animals are our top priorities.
This tour uses 4X4 safari vehicles with high ground clearance. These vehicles are designed for rugged terrain but require agility to embark and disembark. Expect long driving days (4–8 hours) over roads that are often rough, dusty, and bumpy. This is part of the authentic African safari experience, but passengers with back or neck problems should take extra caution.
Included sightseeing walks typically last 1–2 hours over uneven ground. Gorilla trekking can last up to 7 hours through dense forest and slippery slopes. Chimpanzee tracking takes 3–4 hours on forest trails. The Sipi Falls hike involves rocky paths and steep sections. Abseiling requires upper body strength and a head for heights. Walking or cycling safaris at Lake Mburo last 2–3 hours through savannah bush and acacia woodland. The maximum altitude during trekking is 8,553 feet (2,607 meters) .
This is a Small Group program (typically 2–6 travelers). This allows for personalized attention, flexibility, and a more intimate safari experience.
Pack lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and trousers in neutral colors (khaki, olive, beige). Bring a warm fleece or jacket for chilly early mornings and evenings. A rain jacket or poncho is essential as rain can occur year-round. Wear comfortable, waterproof hiking boots that are already broken in. Pack sandals or comfortable shoes for lodge use. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are essential for sun protection. Bring a swimsuit for lodges with pools or for Lake Bunyonyi.
Binoculars are essential for bird and wildlife viewing. Bring a camera with extra batteries and memory cards, as charging may be limited. A headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries is crucial during power outages. A power bank will keep your devices charged. Carry a universal travel adapter (Uganda uses UK-style 3-pin plugs, 220-240V).
Bring all prescription medications in sufficient quantity for the entire trip, plus extras. Take malaria prophylaxis as prescribed. Pack insect repellent with DEET (50% or higher), sunscreen (SPF 30+), lip balm with SPF, and a first aid kit containing band-aids, antiseptic, pain relievers, anti-diarrheal medication, and rehydration salts. Hand sanitizer, wet wipes, and toilet paper or tissues are essential as facilities are limited in parks.
Carry your passport (valid 6 months beyond travel), a printed copy of your Uganda eVisa, your Yellow Fever Certificate, comprehensive travel insurance policy, flight itineraries, and credit cards (Visa/Mastercard) plus cash in US Dollars for tips and souvenirs.
Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for this tour. Your policy must include medical coverage (including emergency hospitalization), medical evacuation (helicopter or air ambulance from remote areas), trip cancellation and interruption, lost or delayed baggage, and coverage for adventure activities (gorilla trekking, abseiling, walking safaris). Uganda has limited medical facilities. In case of serious injury or illness, evacuation to Nairobi or your home country may be required — which is extremely expensive without insurance. Do not travel without adequate coverage.
The local currency is the Ugandan Shilling (UGX) . US Dollars are widely accepted for permits, hotels, and larger purchases. Bills must be dated 2006 or newer and in good condition (no tears, marks, or writing). Credit cards are accepted at major hotels and lodges, but a 5–10% surcharge often applies. ATMs are available in Kampala, Jinja, and larger towns but not in remote areas.
Tipping is not mandatory but is greatly appreciated in Uganda’s tourism industry. Recommended daily tips are: $15–$20 USD per person per day for your driver-guide; $10–$15 USD collectively for gorilla or chimpanzee trackers and rangers; $5–$10 USD for lodge staff (collected in a communal box); and $15–$20 USD per trek for a porter during gorilla tracking — this is highly recommended as they carry your daypack and assist on steep slopes while supporting local employment.
Leave No Trace: Carry out all rubbish. Parks have strict waste management policies. Do not litter. Respect Wildlife: Maintain a distance of at least 7 meters (21 feet) from gorillas and chimpanzees. Do not use flash photography. Follow your guide’s instructions at all times. Support Local Communities: Purchase crafts directly from community projects such as Bigodi, Batwa, and Karamojong initiatives. This supports sustainable tourism and empowers local people. Carbon Offset: Consider offsetting your international flights through a reputable carbon offset program.
